The body of a South Korean man was found with his hands and feet nailed to a wooden cross in an abandoned stone quarry in Mungyong, 115 miles south of Seoul. His head was bound with a crown of thorns. He was made to resemble Jesus Christ.

The man, wearing only underwear, had a wound on the side of his torso and nylon strings tied around his neck, arms and stomach, said Chung Ji-chun, leader of the Gyeongbuk Provincial Police Agency’s violent crime section.

Two smaller crosses were erected to the side of the cross he was nailed to. Police also found nails, a hammer, an electric drill, and pieces of wood and instructions on how to build crosses.

An SUV belonging to the man was found nearby.

Police are currently investigating the matter to determine if it was a homicide or a suicide. The 58-year-old was believed to have held extreme religious views by friends and family.
