A hospital surveillance video caught 18-year-old Shantaniqua Scott attempting to suffocate her baby in July 2010.

Hidden cameras captured the horrifying act. Scott could be seen clamping her hand on the struggling newborn baby boy as he kicked and struggled for life.

The toddler’s body appeared limp after she had removed her hand from his face.

Seconds later, doctors and nurses rushed into the room as alarms went off indicating that the baby had stopped breathing. They managed to successfully resuscitate the child, although only time will tell if the child suffered any permanent damage as a result of the attack.

Footage of the attack was shown to a Fort Worth courtroom, where Scott was held on trial for attempting to kill her newborn son.

Doctors originally believed that the baby had suffered from severe acid reflux when he was originally reported to have stopped breathing and taken to the hospital. Doctors strongly suspected that he was a victim of abuse, and had hidden cameras set up to monitor the child while he was in their custody.

The hidden camera captured Scott peering into her son’s cot and forcing a blanket over his face for 20 seconds. When a nurse briefly entered, she pretended to check her cellphone and not long after she was left alone, she tried to suffocate her son again for a minute longer.

When she was finally caught, Scott confessed to police that she did not want to care for her child anymore and and admitted that she wanted to go back to the “carefree attitude” she once had before her son was born.

Shantaniqua Scott faces life imprisonment if she is convicted of the crime.
